5.1 Procedures of Teaching

The procedures and the teaching method that I use in teaching in Miagao National High School grade nine Diamond , Amethyst and Sapphire are many types of Cooperative teaching method such as Snowball Throwing method, Talking Stick method, STAD and etc. I choose to use cooperative teaching method is because it’s more student center learning and I need to make my students more active and creative in the class.

Here are the procedure how I conduct my teaching practical :

·         I let the students to pray
·         I check the attendance
·         I Introduce my self in front of the class (* just for the first time meeting)
·         I ask them to stand up and do some exercise such as baby shark dance or clapping hands
·         I greet the students, ask how they feel , are they okay or not and etc.
·     I give the students some motivation such as give some question or quiz and play some video for them to engage the students with the material
·         I ask the students to share their opinion about the video before we move to the discussion
·      During the discussion I will show some power point that consist of the material and ask the student to read that , I just ask them randomly after that I will explain the material shortly and clearly to them
·     During the practice or drill I may give the students two activities for example like fill in blank or arranging the sentences, usually during the practice drill also I implement the cooperative teaching method such as game and so on
·        For evaluation and group work I usually divided the students into several group randomly and conduct some group activity, I also give the students time around 4 – 5 minutes to discuss about the assignment with their group before presenting it in front of the class
·       If there’s not enough time we may continue discuss it in the next meeting

5.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities

For the time management and organizing activities itself , I use watch  and  my smart phone to see the time but on the other hand I already planning whatever I want to do and how long that some activities might take in my lesson and my notebook. In one session for an hour or 60 minutes, I allocate the time as follows :

·         (3 minutes) to let the students pray
·         (2 minutes) for greeting the students
·         (3 minutes) for exercise such as clopping hands and baby shark dance
·         (4 minutes) Motivation by showing some videos or picture deals with the material
·        (4 minutes) Elicitation , we might discuss the video that has been showed here or the teacher might provide some quiz for the students before do the discussion , it’s very effective to engage the students into the material and make the students more curios about whats next in the lesson
·     (5 minutes) Discussion and explanation the material by the teacher , the students also have chance to ask the teacher question during the discussion if they still don’t understand the material
·     (15 minutes) for practice / drill , in this section there would be at least two activities such as arranging sentences, fill in the blank and so on using cooperative teaching method, and usually the teacher will implement some games deals with the material so that the students will enjoy the practice time very well.  The assessment also will directly given by the teacher after the activities.
·    (24 minutes) for group discussion which is including 3 minutes to divided the students into several group randomly, 2 minutes to give clear instruction about the group activity, 5 minutes to let the students discuss the material with the group member, 10 minutes for all groups to represent their discussion in front of the class, each groups given 2 minutes to present their work, 3 minutes to assess the group activities.
·   (2 minutes) for closing and conclusion about what we have learn in that day, and also the teacher will inform the students about the next material, greeting and praying.

During the group discussion, the teacher also walking around the class to check the group discussion and ask the students if they really understand the instruction and if the students have a question they can ask the teacher on that time. The total of the teaching hour my internship or practical teaching is 20 hours of teaching and assist, and  also my teaching evaluation is done before I reach 20 hours of teaching.

4.3 Problem Solving

            I don’t have much problem in teaching the students because the students are very good and fast learner students specially the Diamond class but I have little bit problem with the curriculum, lesson plan or teaching plan and the material because we have different curriculum between Indonesia and Philippines and of course the materials and the lesson plan , the focus of the lesson plan also would be different and the other problem is I don’t have students teacher whose can guide me in make my lesson plan not like the other students exchage. I also only have one day to observe the teacher and I conduct my teaching practice the next day without ask more day to do the observation on the other hand I try to use 100% English during my intership because we have different national language .

      To overcome the problem about the differences of the curriculum, lesson plan and materials, I try to understand it step by step and I ask my cooperative teacher how to make it and I ask for some example of the lesson plan from my cooperative teacher and after I finish my lesson plan with same format as the lesson plan that they use in the school, I immediately ask my cooperative teacher to check it if it’s already correct or wrong. Then for the material itself, I try to search from the other resources like internet and download various types of videos, picture, e- book and etc to make my materials, teaching strategy , teaching media and teaching method more interesting for the students. My teaching style might be different from my cooperative teacher but I make sure that the students really understand the materials and  feels happy in my class. On the other hand, I try to be more confident and challenge my self to do my best even though without the students teachers help or even though I only have a single day to do my observation. To overcome the language barriers between me and my students, I use 100% English in the class in teaching my students, if I forget certain words, I will use my gesture, expression or explain it with the other words, I’m also very lucky because my students don’t have difficulties in understanding my pronunciation and I always become friendly, lovely, warm and easy to approach by them.

The classes have 45 to 47 students in one class so it’s quite crowded actually and they place the students chair into two big row with position facing each other, mostly the boys will sit in the left side and the girls will sit in the right side. I like to teach with big space in the middle or in front of the class  and I like all of my students being active in my class, so  I always ask them to make space in the middle and I always divided them into several group and ask them to sit with their group properly, I also choose the group randomly so it’s consider to be more fair for the students and for me. I like to have fresh, wide and active atmosphere in my class so that my students would not feel bored and stress during the lesson. If they start make some noise, I catch their attention by ask them to clap their hands and say the words “Hi,Hello” or sometimes I play some music and let them sing in the class. I also make some jokes with them during the lesson so that they will feel happy and enjoy the lesson , because I believe that whenever the students feel happy it’s more effective to conduct the teaching and learning process because the students would be more active and the teacher would be more creative.
